East Chicago Sanitary District

The Sanitary District of East Chicago requested approval of new sewer rates in IURC Cause No. 45632.

The IURC has approved a settlement agreement among all parties in the case.

  • The OUCC, sanitary district, and industrial customers filed testimony in support of the agreement.
  • A residential customer using 5,000 gallons per month currently pays $20.60 for sewage disposal service. Under the approved agreement, that amount will rise to $25.00 later this year. It will rise to $26.98 in September 2023 and to $29.25 in September 2024.
  • The Commission may approve, deny, or modify any settlement it considers.

The OUCC recommended approval of approximately half the utility's request in testimony filed on Feb. 9, 2022.

Our infographic outlines the steps in a rate case. The OUCC issued a Jan. 5, 2022 news release to invite public comments. An IURC public field hearing was held in East Chicago on Jan. 11, 2022.

All publicly filed documents are available through the IURC's electronic document system, including the utility's petition and testimony (Riley and Myers - Parts 1 & 2).
