Installing Your Own Septic System?

Because of past negative experiences, both for us and the unfortunate homeowners, the Health Department now requires that anyone who wants to install their own septic system take and pass our Installer's Exam. We try to dissuade individuals from installing their own septic systems and advise that they leave it to the professionals. There are hundreds of State rules that must be followed to "a T", and often, individuals are not aware of all of these. After taking the exam, you will either learn how to properly install a septic system, or you will say, "Jeeze Louise! I don't want to tackle this!"

If you want to take the Installer's Exam, click here. State code regarding the septic rule, Rule 410 IAC 6-8.3, Residential Sewage Disposal Systems, can be found here. Take the test at your leisure and bring, fax, or mail it back to the Health Department to be graded. If you pass with a score of 80% or more, you will receive a wallet-size certificate -- then you are free to install your septic system.
