Processes incoming filings and outgoing orders and opinions for Indiana’s appellate courts; maintains court records and the Roll of Attorneys.
Provides ethical guidance to judges and handles judicial discipline investigations; recruits and interviews applicants for appellate court vacancies.
Responsible for investigating attorney misconduct and prosecuting lawyer discipline proceedings.
Certifies that all individuals admitted to practice law have fulfilled the requirements for admission; oversees the legal education requirements of attorneys, judges and mediators, and maintains a mediator registry.
Assists judges, lawyers, and law students with personal issues—addiction, mental health, physical, age-related, and other concerns—that have the potential to reduce their effectiveness.
Develops education, programs, and projects for all courts to improve the administration of justice; certifies problem-solving courts, probation officers, and court interpreters; compiles court statistics.
Provides support for day-to-day operations; assists the Supreme Court with creating a vision for how technology can improve court operations and access to justice; develops custom applications for data sharing with the public and state agencies.
Provides legal services to Supreme Court staff, agencies, and trial courts; oversees ADA accommodation and language access; and serves as liaison with the Attorney General on litigation involving the courts as a party.
Manages media inquiries, public information, and opportunities for educators to engage with the judicial branch; oversees the Supreme Court’s website; creates and distributes press releases; and coordinates messaging campaigns.
Manages the Supreme Court budget and assets, processes financial transactions and invoices, and provides accurate, timely financial information to the Court and other government officials. Assists with hiring and disciplinary issues, training, and payroll and benefits.
Technology in our courts
The state offers a variety of technology solutions to local trial courts to help them share data, follow best practices, and offset limited funding from local property taxes.
Statewide case management and electronic filing
In 2007, Indiana began installation of the Odyssey case management system. A significant portion of the state's cases are managed in Odyssey, and more than two-thirds of counties have voluntarily adopted it.
Odyssey makes it possible for Hoosiers to find their case information online at mycase.in.gov at no cost. Criminal defendants can also now receive text messages about upcoming hearings if their cell numbers are collected by the court or probation staff. Odyssey also makes it possible for courts to share data with the agencies that rely on it and to recover millions in unpaid court fees through tax refund intercepts.
Indiana's trial and appellate courts began implementation of statewide e-filing in mid-2015. Only a handful of counties have yet to begin e-filing as they prepare to start using Odyssey. Once Odyssey is implemented in these courts, adoption of voluntary and mandatory e-filing will be scheduled.
