When a loved one passes away, it’s hard to know what to do first.
Contacting family and friends. Finding out how much the funeral/memorial expenses will be. Getting a death certificate. These are only a few examples of the important, detailed things that need to be done. The last thing you want to do when you’re grieving is to sift through websites and handbooks to figure out how to handle your loved one’s retirement funds.
Everything you need to know about INPRS death benefits starts here. This page has a checklist that can be provided to survivors and beneficiaries for each member’s plan type. This article covers the basics since many factors play into the death benefits process: the specific plan type, whether the member was retired or still working, etc. See below for more information about the overall process when an INPRS member dies and when to expect to hear from us.
First, the death needs to be reported.
INPRS doesn’t automatically discover when a death occurs, so it’s important to notify us as soon as possible. Anyone can report the death by calling (844) 464-6777. Death certificates and required paperwork can be sent according to instructions in the plan’s checklist.
Then, INPRS begins a 30-day review process.
Once the 30-day review is complete, we will mail death benefit eligibility results, any next steps, and required paperwork to the designated survivor or representative.

You can find a checklist outlining the initial, most important steps when an INPRS member dies. If research is your thing, the checklist will make finding information in our handbooks easier. This page, also, explains the difference between survivors and beneficiaries, what to do when benefits begin, and who we can speak to regarding death benefit applications.
