TRF & PERF:
New My Choice Second Chance Option Increases Employee Choices
As of July 1, 2026, active, vested TRF My Choice members have the option to make a one-time irrevocable change, and opt-in to the TRF Hybrid Plan.
Active, vested PERF My Choice members, whose employer offers both the PERF Hybrid Fund and PERF My Choice plan and opts to allow this election, may have the option to make a one-time irrevocable change, and opt-in to the PERF Hybrid Plan.
For a PERF employer to allow My Choice members to elect to participate in the Hybrid Fund, the employer must do so using the Resolution Electing to Enlarge Coverage In the Public Employees’ Retirement Fund My Choice Plan form, which must be requested by contacting the Employer Advocate Team at EPPA@inprs.in.gov
*TRF Employers do NOT need to complete or submit any enlargement or coverage documentation as the new law allows all eligible TRF members a second chance to elect to participate in TRF Hybrid.

1977 Fund:
Lump Sum Death Benefit and Survivors of Inactive Members Increases from $12k to $15k
In the case of a member’s death, their surviving spouse and/or surviving dependent(s) may be entitled to survivor benefits.
Lump Sum Death Benefit
Your heirs or estate is entitled to receive a one-time death benefit of $15,000 upon your death unless you are an inactive, non-vested member at the time of your death. The $15,000 benefit is always taxable regardless of whether the death was or was not in the line of duty.
Survivors of Inactive Members (Not Vested)
If you are an inactive member with less than 20 years of active service and you die, there is no survivor benefit payable. Your contributions plus interest are payable to your designated beneficiary(ies) or estate. The $15,000 death benefit is not payable to inactive non-vested members.
For additional information regarding death benefits, please view page 25 of the 1977 Fund handbook here.
