Internship Program at INDOT

Interested in a career in public service? Consider spending your summer with the Indiana Department of Transportation!

INDOT is uniquely positioned to give you an in-depth understanding of what working for a state agency entails. With more than 3,600 employees throughout Indiana, our team is comprised of individuals with many backgrounds and experiences.

INDOT is responsible for more than 11,000 miles of roadway and nearly 6,000 bridges throughout the state. Whether constructing new roads or working to maintain what we have, coordinating all of these efforts takes a well-developed, qualified team.

We have available summer internships in many different divisions, including our many civil engineering areas, project management, communications, finance, human resources, information technology, legal services, and real estate, in addition to our career development and pipeline programs for civil engineering students.

If you’re considering a career in the public sector, INDOT has a position that will help you to develop your professional skills. Come work for an agency whose work impacts nearly everyone in Indiana every single day. Our interns are valued members of our teams, and we’d love for you to join us.

Valuable Work Experience

No de-stapling papers here. Forget the monotonous, you’re expected to work on real projects that make a difference. Interns will spend at least 50 percent of their time on a predetermined project that enhances college-level skills and abilities. Samples of past intern projects are included below.

Construction Inspection intern: Two bridge projects over Sagamore Parkway in the West Lafayette area, a bridge replacement and a deck replacement.

Research and Development intern: Pavement sample research and testing to understand the crack resistance of asphalt in lab versus field samples.

Technical Services intern: Reviewed crash analysis for a traffic corridor, completed signal warrant analysis, left turn signal analysis, and made recommendations to the Traffic P.E.

Design intern: Led a preliminary field check with local town leadership after developing stage-one plans for a road reconstruction project.

Make an Impact

“My internship was everything I could have imagined. I was given typical engineering responsibilities and was treated like anyone else in the division. I was surrounded by people who truly enjoy working at the State and that makes me want to work with INDOT in the future.” – Calvin, Hydraulics Intern, Indianapolis

“Employees would stop in to chat with me and offer to show me what they were working on. They always appeared to want to teach me new things.” – Aubrea, Traffic Intern, Fort Wayne

“I built GIS maps, performed field checks, and even had a group of interns who went to lunch together every 2 weeks. I gained professional experience and the program over exceeded my expectations.” Tahirah, Technical Services Intern, LaPorte

“My time with the Talent Management department taught me so much about INDOT, state government, and employee development. My team made sure I felt welcome and included, and I feel that I was able to contribute valued projects to the agency. I’d highly recommend considering INDOT for your summer internship if you’re interested in public service.” Faith, Talent Management Intern, Indianapolis
