Purpose of the 2019 Listening Sessions
As part of our mission to help meet the needs and concerns of the Indiana Hispanic and Latino population, the Indiana Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs will be implementing three community listening sessions state-wide. The purpose of these listening sessions is to help:
- Create a database for the state of Indiana regarding the concerns and challenges facing this community.
- Collect data and information on the community’s concerns to share with organizations that focus on those issues.
- To provide the Governor and lawmakers with suggestions on policies regarding those issues.
This will be further broken down into the North (Goshen), South (Evansville), and Central (Indianapolis) parts of the state.
Goshen
The first listening session for Indiana Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs took place on April 5th in Goshen, Indiana. With the exposure from local and state-wide media coverage and the wonderful network of partners, ICHLA was able to truly hear from and serve the Indiana-based Hispanic and Latino population. From this session, we were able to partner with more than 24 various organizations and 10 exhibitors from different fields of expertise; such as health, civil rights, education, public safety, and workforce. Some of these organizations included:
- Center for Healing & Hope
- Goshen College
- Elkhart Community Schools
- Goshen Community Schools
- Horizon Education Alliance (education advocacy consortium)
- Ivy Tech Community College (Elkhart campus)
- La Casa (nonprofit housing agency)
- Latino Voter Registration (ad hoc community effort to register voters)
- National Immigrant Justice Center
- Radio Horizonte (nonprofit radio station)
These groups opened themselves to the more than 200 attendees present for the event on the services available to the community and helped to best answer questions posed to them regarding their field. Along with providing educational resourcing, we were also able to hand out community surveys regarding issues and concerns the attendees may have. From the completed surveys received, we have gained an incredible insight into the true challenges and concerns of the community, as well as, suggestions for ways that we as an organization can better help address or resolve said issues. Taking these surveys, we hope to increase our reach state-wide and be proactive in our service to the Hispanics and Latinos present.
Evansville
The second listening session for the Indiana Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs was held on August 3rd in Evansville Indiana. Having learned immensely from the first listening session, we were able to bring 17 new organizations and personnel that could better address specific questions regarding their field and services. We expanded our network to include organizations such as:
- The Indiana Latino Institute
- Old National Bank
- St. Vincent of Evansville
- ECHO Clinics
- HOLA
- The Indiana Latino Collaborative Table
- Community Action Program of Evansville
- Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield
- The Vanderburgh County Health Department
- Indiana Migrant Education Program
- Moms Help Line
Along with expanding our network of partners, we decided to help provide various services to the nearly 150 attendees and families in attendance. We were able to provide free health screenings and mammograms for mothers and children, as well as, back packs and schools supplies for families that needed them.
Regarding the community surveys we received back; we began to see similar statements and concerns being repeated from those we initially saw from the Goshen listening session, as well as, new issues that we were unaware existed. We are confident that with this new information, we can implement better practices to administer change in the state and honor our mission to the Hispanic and Latino community.
Indianapolis
The last listening session for this year will take place on October 12th in Indianapolis Indiana. In partnership with the Indiana Latino Expo, we will be helping to provide various services for those that attend; including job-fair workshops, organizational collaborations, and much more. With the centralized location, we are confident that we will be able to reach more people and receive further data to help us in our mission.

Como parte de nuestra misión de ayudar a satisfacer las necesidades y preocupaciones de la población hispana y latina de Indiana, la Comisión de Asuntos Hispanos / Latinos de Indiana está implementando tres sesiones de escucha comunitaria en todo el estado. El propósito de estas sesiones de escucha es ayudar a:

Estos grupos se abrieron a los más de 200 presentes para el evento sobre los servicios disponibles para la comunidad y ayudaron a responder mejor las preguntas que se les hicieron con respecto a su campo. Además de proporcionar recursos educativos, también pudimos entregar encuestas a la comunidad sobre los problemas y las inquietudes que puedan tener. De las encuestas completadas recibidas, hemos obtenido una visión general de los verdaderos desafíos y preocupaciones de la comunidad, así como sugerencias de formas en que nosotros como organización podemos ayudar mejor a abordar o resolver dichos problemas. Junto con la expansión de nuestra red de socios, decidimos ayudar a proporcionar diversos servicios a los casi 150 presentes y familias que asistieron. Pudimos proporcionar exámenes de salud gratuitos y mamografías para madres, así como mochilas y útiles escolares para las familias que los necesitaban.
En cuanto a las encuestas comunitarias que recibimos de vuelta; comenzamos a ver que se repetían declaraciones y preocupaciones similares de las que vimos inicialmente en la sesión de escucha de Goshen, así como también, diferentes problemas existentes. Estamos seguros de que con esta nueva información, podemos implementar mejores prácticas para administrar el cambio en el estado y honrar nuestra misión en la comunidad hispana y latina.
Indianápolis
La última sesión de escucha para este año tendrá lugar el 12 de octubre en Indianápolis, Indiana. En asociación con la Indiana Latino Expo, La Plaza, Ciudad de Indianápolis con el Alcalde, IUPUI y el Consulado de México estaremos apoyando varios servicios para aquellos que asistan; incluyendo talleres de feria de empleo, colaboraciones organizacionales y mucho más. Con la ubicación centralizada, estamos seguros de que podremos llegar a más personas y recibir más datos para ayudarnos en nuestra misión.
