Governor’s Summer Internship
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program provides currently enrolled students with an opportunity to be exposed to working in state government. Interns in the program will work with state agency officials and be immersed in co-curricular activities that aim to boost their professional skills and expose them to ins-and-outs of state government. While each internship placement is within a specific state agency, interns will be able to interact with others in the program in bi-weekly cohort activities.
About the Indiana Geographic Information Office (IGIO)
The IGIO deals directly with Geographic Information Systems. Our office develops, maintains, and distributes statewide geographic data and also manages geospatial technology at the state level. We coordinate with various state agencies, local governments, and federal partners.
Providing public access to statewide GIS Data is at the core of our mission.
About the Geospatial Data Scientist Intern
In this internship, the intern will support our office by exploring our data catalog and creating new, derived datasets from our existing archive. These include, but are not limited to, imagery, lidar point clouds, digital elevation models, and more. Our office utilizes Esri software, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, but there is potential to use open-source software and other analytical platforms.
An example of the intern’s workload might include identifying datasets, data processing and preparation, developing models, conducting QAQC on analyses, collaborating with team members, creating detailed documentation on workflows, and presenting findings and results.
Students with degrees focusing on Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Data Science, Informatics, and other relevant fields are encouraged to apply. Ideally, the candidate will be an upper-level undergraduate or a graduate-level student.
The intern will be tasked with a major project related to our office’s needs and their academic area of study.
