DCS requires each licensee in the foster family home to successfully complete 15 hours of in-service training annually, which includes specialized training to meet the child's specific needs. Each DCS region will provide opportunities for in-service training on a regular basis.
Online training:
At least seven of the 15 required hours must be completed in person (face-to-face). Utilize the RAPT Class Catalog to find descriptions of trainings that DCS offers. Find the date, time and location of the training you would like to attend by looking at RAPT Schedules. To sign up for training, email: DCSRAPTRegistrations@dcs.in.gov. DCS allows licensees to earn up to eight of the 15 required hours through alternative trainings (online trainings, books, videos, etc.). Each foster parent who substitutes alternative training hours needs to:
- Verify alternative training activities are on Approved Alternative In-Service Training document lists.
- Contact the Regional Foster Care Specialist (RFCS) to request approval of any non-approved training prior to completing the training activities.
- Complete and submit an Alternative Training Verification (SF52643) form to be approved by the RFCS.
DCS requires a licensee to complete Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, and universal precautions/blood-borne pathogens training prior to initial licensure. CPR/first aid certification must include adult and pediatric airway obstruction under the American Heart Association guidelines. Additionally, each certification must be current in order to maintain a foster family home license. A CPR/first aid certification is good for two years. Universal precautions/blood-borne pathogens training must be taken every year.
Your RFCS will provide information on how to sign up for and complete medical training. The foster family home applicant or licensee must submit a copy of the certificate of completion to the RFCS.
Join our DCS Clinical Consultants for a series of trainings regarding youth with high-acuity needs. Trainings are scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. ET and are held virtually.
