In Indiana, if you ever have to go to court and do not speak English very well, you can ask for a court interpreter. Court interpreters are specially trained people who speak English and another language extremely well. They also understand the legal language used in courts and can help you communicate with judges and court staff.
A court interpreter’s job is to interpret everything you say into English and everything that is said in English into your language, exactly as it is said. This helps you understand what people are saying—and helps you say what you want in your language.
Court interpreters cannot give you legal advice. They also cannot answer your questions or explain what is happening in court. But they can interpret your questions and the answers given so you can get the answers you need.
There are a few other things to remember when working with a court interpreter:
- First, speak slowly and only in your language—even if you know some English.
- Secondly, when someone else is speaking to you, listen only to the interpreter. And when you are speaking to someone else, speak directly to that person, and not to the interpreter.
- Finally, be sure to speak clearly and loudly so that the interpreter and others can hear you. And if you cannot hear the interpreter, be sure to say something as soon as possible.
