Overview
Admission and Discipline Rule 6 governs Admissions on Business Counsel License and Foreign License. The Indiana State Board of Law Examiners is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the admission of attorneys from other states seeking to be admitted in Indiana without taking the bar examination.
A committee of the Board of Law Examiners reviews Business Counsel License applications. A business counsel license is when a lawyer admitted in another state who establishes an office or other systematic and continuous presence in Indiana in order to accept or continue employment by an entity engaged in business in Indiana other than the practice of law, may be granted a license to practice law in Indiana, without examination upon a showing that he or she meets certain specified conditions. If approved, a personal interview before a member of that committee is required. If the committee is not unanimous in approval, a personal interview and approval before the full Board is required.
Education Requirements for Business Counsel License
Admission and Discipline Rule 6 provides that all applicants admitted to the practice of law via reciprocity or on a business counsel license shall be required to complete the Indiana Law Course — a jurisdiction-specific component on Indiana law — no later than six months after the date of the applicant’s admission to the Indiana bar.
