The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changed federal laws regarding the availability of medically important antibiotics(MIA) for use in feed by requiring a VFD from a licensed veterinarian with a valid veterinary-client-patient-relationship (VCPR). The goal of this change is to minimize the opportunity for drug-resistant organisms to develop by requiring veterinary oversight of MIA for use in livestock feed. These changes went into effect on January 1, 2017.

a. Drug manufacturers for specific products;
b. Global Vet Link (GVL) offers electronic VFD service; or
c. FDA guidance document and sample VFD form to generate a form
