COVID Updates for CDLs and For-Hire

Commercial Driver and For-Hire Operational Changes

BMV Operations for CLP/CDL and For-Hire Transactions

The BMV has several branches open by appointment only. Appointments are available Monday through Saturday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

They are processing several transaction types including CLP/CDL and For-Hire with specific requirements for each:

To schedule an appointment, go online or call our Customer Contact Center at 888-692-6841. We are available to assist you Monday – Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET.


  • Available Transactions

    Transactions will be restricted to the following:

    • New Class A CDL (with or without MC)
    • New Class B CDL (with or without MC)
    • New Class C CDL (with or without MC)
    • New Restricted Class B CDL (with or without MC)
    • New Class A CLP
    • New Class B CLP
    • Upgrade/downgrade for the CDL to add the tank vehicle or hazardous materials endorsement
    • New Operator’s License to add For-Hire endorsement
    • Amend Operator’s License to add For-Hire endorsement
    • Renewal of a Chauffeur or Public Passenger Chauffeur License to obtain a For-Hire endorsement

    Any knowledge testing associated with any of the above listed transactions will be permitted.

    If a customer fails any portion of the knowledge exam they must schedule an additional appointment to make another attempt. This must occur at least the next business day depending on appointment availability.

    Additional transactions, including all new CDL related titling and registration transactions can either be completed through regular mail or via BMV partner locations. Renewal transactions are covered under the aforementioned Executive Order extensions.

  • How to submit a MER and MEC to the BMV

    Use one of the following options to submit completed MER and MEC:

Important Information about Scheduling an appointment

 

To schedule an appointment, go to our appointment page. If you have trouble scheduling online, call our Customer Contact Center at 888-692-6841. The Customer Contact Center team is available to assist you Monday – Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET.

All CLP/CDL and For-Hire transactions can be completed including those that require knowledge testing.

When you arrive for an appointment, please be prompt and make sure you bring all required documentation. A branch team member will greet you at the door and will require you to show proof of identity before you can enter the branch.

In line with ISDH and CDC recommendations, the BMV will do the following to ensure employee and customer safety:

  • Allow time in between appointments to clean/sanitize space 
  • Have supplies for employees to wash and sanitize their hands regularly 
  • Have a Plexiglas barrier between employees and customers


CDL 3rd Party Skills Test Sites

Individuals will need to check with the BMV-authorized skills test sites to ensure they are open for skills test as several across the state are closed. The BMV is maintaining a list on this website, but the decision to be open during this time is up to each individual skills test site. Therefore, we encourage drivers to reach out to the authorized sites directly to determine if they are currently operating.
