Household Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste

The goal of IDEM's household hazardous waste (HHW) program is to support and promote the proper management and disposal of hazardous materials commonly found in Hoosier homes and exempt small businesses. OPPTA works with communities and solid waste management districts to promote the development of HHW services. Residents seeking HHW disposal assistance should contact their local HHW collection program [DOC].

A household product that contains hazardous substances becomes household hazardous waste once the consumer no longer has a use for it and disposes of it. Hazardous waste from households is not regulated as hazardous waste under federal and Indiana laws. HHW includes such items as old paint and paint related products, pesticides, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, and degreasers and other car care products. Such consumer waste products if carelessly managed can create environmental and public health hazards.
