South Bend Municipal Water

The City of South Bend is seeking a rate increase for its municipal water utility.

On May 31, 2017, the City filed its petition and testimony (Horvath and Walsh) with the IURC. The full case file is available by clicking here and entering cause number 44951.

A recent IURC docket entry details the case's procedural schedule. The OUCC is reviewing the utility's request and is scheduled to file testimony on November 17, 2017. Our website includes an overview of the rate case process and a guide for providing public input.

Consumers have two opportunities for public comment:

  • By speaking at the IURC's public field hearing on October 24, 2017. The hearing will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Century Center Recital Hall (120 South Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in South Bend).
  • By sending written consumer comments to the OUCC for the case record by November 13, 2017.

The OUCC's October 10, 2017 news release offers additional information.

Only South Bend's water rates are at issue in this case. Municipal sewer utilities are exempt from IURC oversight, with their rates set by elected city and town councils.
