The Knightstown Municipal Electric Utility is seeking a rate increase in IURC Cause No. 44460-U. Knightstown filed its 75-page request on March 5, 2014.

If approved, the request for a 9.6 percent increase would raise the monthly rate for a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) from $93.80 to $102.84.

Under the OUCC's recommendations, the increase would be limited to 5.8 percent.

The OUCC issued a March 24, 2014 news release to invite consumer comments. The town is seeking the rate increase through the state's Small Utility Filing Procedure.

Knightstown's current base rates were approved in 2006.

Knightstown and other electric utilities are also allowed to adjust rates periodically through IURC proceedings, to recover purchased power costs on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

In the IURC's most recent survey of residential utility rates, Knightstown's rates ranked fifth-highest among the 14 electric utilities under IURC jurisdiction.
