About the Project image

THE US 31 KOKOMO CORRIDOR PROJECT IS A STUDY OF TRANSPORTATION NEEDS AND POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS ALONG US 31 IN THE CITY OF KOKOMO AND HOWARD COUNTY, INDIANA.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has issued a Record of Decision (ROD) for the U.S. 31 Kokomo Corridor Project. The ROD authorizes the preferred alternative identified during the environmental impact study and concludes this phase of the project. It approves the Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) recommendation of what and where to build to address the safety and congestion issues in the project area.

The selected alternative for the project, previously identified in the Environmental Impact Study as Alternative J Modified, calls for a new, limited-access, four-lane freeway located approximately two miles east of the existing U.S. 31 on the south end and approximately 1.2 miles east of the existing U.S. 31 on the north. The US 31 Kokomo Corridor Project is located primarily in Howard County and covers a distance of approximately 14 miles.

The U.S. 31 Kokomo Corridor Project now moves to the design phase. Construction is expected to begin in 2009 and last approximately six years.
