US 31 Bridge & Roundabout Project in Bartholomew County

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) began a multi-faceted project on U.S. Highway 31 beginning March 7, 2016.

INDOT contractors will remove and replace pavement under CSX’s railroad bridge and, once complete, will begin to repair the highway from U.S. 50 to the Sand Creek Bridge.

INDOT plans to close U.S. 31 at Sand Creek starting on April 18, 2016 for 240 days to remove and replace the bridge at Sand Creek. The bridge is local 7.2 miles south of State Road 7. Detours will be marked for motorists traveling in the area. Motorists from the north can reach C.R. 900 South; those driving from the south can access C.R. 1150N.  A state highway detour will route traffic around the construction area by way of U.S. 50 and Interstate 65 via Exit 76 at Crothersville. Work is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2016.

While the bridge is being replaced, contractors will also replace a concrete box culvert north of the bridge.

In the fall of 2016, INDOT will begin construction on a roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 31 and C.R. 400 South. The single-lane roundabout features an 18-foot travel lave and a 10-foot truck apron circling an 85-foot center island.
