The Indiana Gateway rail project is located in Northwest Indiana between Porter, Ind., and the Illinois state line. INDOT was awarded $71.4 million for final design and construction of the project, which will improve intercity passenger rail service, from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Indiana Gateway project is the result of a Public Private Partnership between the Federal Railroad Administration, Norfolk Southern, Amtrak and INDOT. The Project began with the submittal of an Application in 2009, Notice of Project Selection in 2010 and Construction Agreements in 2012. Final Design began in 2012 and Construction started in 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2016.
