INDOT > About INDOT > Central Office > Welcome to the Greenfield District > U.S. 31 & S.R. 28 Interchange (Tipton) U.S. 31 & S.R. 28 Interchange (Tipton)

INDOT will build a new U.S. 31 interchange at State Road 28 in Tipton County.  Project plans call for INDOT to bridge State Road 28 over U.S. 31 and construct single-lane roundabouts to regulate ramp traffic. The roundabouts will be designed to accommodate agricultural equipment, large trucks and future expansion.  Plans also include direct access to the Tipton Transmission Plant and a looping ramp for traffic entering southbound U.S. 31.

The new interchange is anticipated to be open to traffic by the end of 2016.

INDOT’s design for the new U.S. 31 and State Road 28 interchange:

  • Supports local economic vision and is endorsed by local governments
  • Accommodates current and forecasted traffic volumes
  • Provides the most efficient traffic flow
  • Offers a high level of safety with the installation of roundabouts and overhead lighting
  • Minimizes impacts to Tucker Cemetery in the southwest quadrant
  • Maintains traffic most efficiently and cost effectively during construction, which includes closing State Road 28 for approximately 120 days
