The Athletic Division is responsible for ensuring the safety of fighters, fairness, and integrity of all professional boxing, professional mixed martial arts, and amateur mixed martial arts events in the state of Indiana.
Mixed martial arts (IC 4-33-22-2) is defined as the unarmed physical confrontation of persons involving the use, subject to limitations established by the Commission, of a combination of techniques from different disciplines of the martial arts, including grappling, kicking, and striking. In most, if not all, scenarios, any event that involves both of: 1) grappling, and 2) kicking and/or striking, will fall under the regulation of the Commission. However, because of the broad scope of this definition and the fine line amongst different disciplines, promoters who intend to put on an event but are unsure as to whether it falls under the Commission's jurisdiction are encouraged to contact our office immediately. Athletic Division staff will work diligently to make sure your event occurs as planned and abides by all applicable statutes and rules, if necessary.
Pursuant to IC 4-33-22-14(d), a person who knowingly, recklessly, or intentionally conducts a match or exhibition without first obtaining a license or permit commits a Class B misdemeanor, which may be punishable by imprisonment for a fixed term of not more than one hundred eighty (180) days and a one thousand dollars ($1,000) fine. If the Commission becomes aware of such unregulated events, the Commission will contact local prosecutors and law enforcement immediately. Furthermore, please be advised that any person participating in or promoting “combative fighting,” as laid out in IC 35-45-18, may commit a Class C misdemeanor or a Class D felony, respectively.
Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions.
