Press release: Applications for J. Wentworth vacancy

For Immediate Release | April 3, 2023

Applications available for Indiana Tax Court

Chief Justice Loretta Rush announced today that the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission will begin accepting applications for the vacancy on the Tax Court. The position will become available when Judge Martha Blood Wentworth retires this summer.

The chief justice encourages eligible Indiana lawyers to consider applying. Applications are due by May 5 at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern).

A candidate for the vacancy must be an Indiana resident and a member of the Indiana Bar for at least five years. The application—which must be submitted online through the Indiana Courts Portal and in hard copy to the Judicial Nominating Commission—requires candidates to provide pertinent background information, writing samples, references, and educational transcripts.

With Chief Justice Rush as chair, the seven-member Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission includes three lawyers elected by their peers and three citizen members appointed by the Governor. The Commission will consider the applications and letters of recommendation and then will conduct public interviews of qualified candidates. Interviews are expected to be conducted May 23. After deliberating in executive session, the Commission will publicly vote to send the three most qualified names to Governor Eric Holcomb. The Governor will have 60 days to select Indiana's next Tax Court judge from the three names submitted by the Commission.

Details on the Commission, including membership, are online. Those interested in applying may contact Commission Staff Attorney, Luba Gore, at lyubov.gore@courts.in.gov.
