Press release: Applications for J. Robb vacancy

For Immediate Release | February 9, 2023

Applications available for Court of Appeals of Indiana

Chief Justice Loretta Rush announced today that the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission will begin accepting applications for a vacancy on the Court of Appeals. The position on the state's second highest court will become available when Judge Margret Robb retires this summer.

The chief justice encourages eligible Indiana judges and lawyers to consider applying. Applications are due by March 17 at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern).

A candidate for the vacancy must be an Indiana resident living in the second appellate district. Candidates must also be a member of the Indiana Bar for at least ten years or have served as an Indiana judge for five years. The application—which must be submitted online through the Indiana Courts Portal and in hard copy to the Judicial Nominating Commission—requires candidates to provide pertinent background information, writing samples, references, and educational transcripts.

With Chief Justice Rush as chair, the seven-member Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission includes three lawyers elected by their peers and three citizen members appointed by the Governor. The Commission will consider the applications and letters of recommendation and then will conduct public interviews of qualified candidates. Interviews are expected to be conducted April 24-25 and May 23. After deliberating in executive session, the Commission will publicly vote to send the three most qualified names to Governor Eric Holcomb. The Governor will have 60 days to select Indiana's next Court of Appeals judge from the three names submitted by the Commission.

Details on the Commission, including membership, are online. Those interested in applying may contact Commission Staff Attorney, Luba Gore, at lyubov.gore@courts.in.gov.
