ICJI > About the Coalition About the Coalition

Protecting Hoosiers from Methamphetamine

The Meth Free Indiana Coalition was formed in 2005 to combat the destruction of Indiana communities caused by methamphetamine. The Meth Protection Act, SEA 444, created strong restrictions on tje sale of many products used to produce or "cook" meth. Many people are surprised to learn the commonality of ingredients frequently used to produce meth. It is precisely that commonality and ease of availability that has contributed to the rise of the drug's production.

As a result, Indiana is taking a tough stand to prevent meth labs from taking hold in our communities. Through the cooperation of The Office of the Governor, the Indiana State Police and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, businesses and citizens from all corners of our state are working together to slow the terrible scourge of methamphetamine. The Meth Free Indiana Coalition kicked off a statewide campaign called "MethWatch" to educate citizens and communitieson strategies to stop the destruction of meth.Indiana Methwatch program

Since July 1, 2005 consumers seeking many familiar cold and allergy medicines were required to ask a pharmacist or clerk for assistance. The new law requires that all medications containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine be located in direct line of sight of the pharmacy counter with constant video monitoring, in a locked cabinet, or behind a counter. In addition, sales of these medications are limited to those 18 or older and require purchasers to show a photo ID and sign a log book, much like prescription drugs.
Another safeguard of the new law is that no person may purchase more than 100 tablets of ephedrine or pseudoephedrine products per week.

The Meth Free Indiana Coalition is comprised of over 15 agencies including Indiana state government, working in conjunction with retailers, groceries, pharmacies, gas stations, and convenience stores to help stop the meth epidemic.
