A SecureID is required for everyone applying for a new Indiana credential (driver’s license, learner’s permit or identification card). Applicants must bring documents to the license branch to prove their identity (name and date of birth), Social Security number, lawful status in the United States and Indiana residency. A SecureID meets federal government requirements for driver’s licenses, identification cards and learner’s permits. 

Persons who are not United States citizens (legal temporary or permanent residents) are required to have a SecureID and must present full documentation to apply for a renewal or replacement of their existing credential. This includes providing documents which prove identity (name and date of birth), Social Security number, lawful status in the United States and Indiana residency.

Customers who are renewing, amending or replacing their current Indiana credential have the option of applying for a SecureID or a non-SecureID. A non-SecureID does not require additional documentation and allows the holder to drive and/or vote. However, please be aware that a non-SecureID may not be acceptable for Federal identification purposes. Indiana residents who want a SecureID are asked to bring original versions or certified copies of the required documents to the license branch so they can obtain a new SecureID credential.

Whether you are getting a new, renewed, amended or replaced credential, you will receive your permanent SecureID credential within 14 days of your visit to the license branch, provided there are no issues with your application or documentation. If there are issues with your application or documentation, you will be contacted by a BMV representative. 

What Do I Need To Do To Get a SecureID?

STEP 1: Gather Your Documents

Be sure that you have the required documents before you visit a license branch. These documents will need to prove your identity (name and date of birth), Social Security number, lawful status in the United States and Indiana residency.

If you have questions or trouble when collecting your documents, you can call the BMV toll-free at 888-692-6841 and speak with a customer service representative for help or visit any Indiana license branch for assistance. For all document categories, the BMV has the ability to grant exceptions if certain items, such as a birth certificate, are not available to you.

If you do not have your birth certificate in your possession (must be an original or certified copy filed with a U.S. state or territory office of vital statistics or equivalent agency in your state of birth), you need to contact your state or county Department of Health and request an original or certified copy. Some states may take up to five months to process duplicate birth certificates.

STEP 2: Visit a License Branch

If you are applying for a new credential, you must bring your required documents to a license branch.

If you are renewing, amending or replacing your current credential, you are asked to bring your documents to a license branch to get a SecureID. You should follow the new SecureID procedures on your normal renewal date.

Whether you are getting a new, renewed, amended or replaced credential, you will receive your permanent SecureID credential within 14 days of your visit to the license branch, provided there are no issues with your application or documentation. If there are issues with your application or documentation, you will be contacted by a BMV representative.

If you have a current Indiana credential and you are having trouble collecting your documents, you can apply for a non-SecureID credential in order to drive and/or vote. As previously mentioned, a non-SecureID may not be acceptable for Federal identification purposes.

STEP 3: Receive your Credentials

Your permanent SecureID credential will be mailed to you after you apply for a new, renewed, amended or replacement credential. You will receive your credential at your mailing address within 14 days, provided there are no issues with your application or documentation. If there are issues with your application or documentation, you will be contacted by a BMV representative. The process used to mail credentials is similar to that used by the financial services industry to mail credit and debit cards.

What Is a Non-SecureID Driver's License or ID Card?

A non-SecureID credential indicates you have not provided the documentation necessary to validate your identity, lawful status, Social Security number and/or Indiana residency. Only individuals with a current Indiana credential are eligible to apply for a non-SecureID.

A non-SecureID driver’s license will allow you to drive and/or vote, but may not be acceptable for Federal identification purposes.

What If I Want To Wait or Can't Find My Documents

All customers applying for a new credential will be required to visit a license branch and submit original versions or certified copies of the required documents.

If you have a current Indiana credential and you are having difficulty collecting your documents, or want to wait, you can apply for a non-SecureID credential in order to drive and/or vote.

State to State (S2S) Credential Verification

To combat the issue of identity theft, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) continues to enhance the security of how credentials (driver’s licenses, IDs, etc.) are issued.

In February of 2016, the BMV began to pilot the State Pointer Exchange Service (SPEXS). SPEXS allows the BMV to check verify if a credential applicant holds a credential in another participating state. This check will occur each time a customer is renewing, amending, or replacing his or her current driver's license, permit or identification card. If more than one credential is identified during the verification process, the BMV will request that the permit, license or identification card issued by any other state be cancelled. If the applicant does not agree to this action, the BMV will be unable to issue an Indiana credential. Indiana law prohibits an individual from holding more than one credential issued by Indiana or any other state.

FAQs

Q: Can I have an Indiana driver’s license and still have an identification card in another state if I have a home in both places?

A: No, Indiana law prohibits individuals from holding more than one credential (learner’s permit, driver’s license or identification card) issued by Indiana or in combination with any credential issued by another state.

Q: Can I opt out of having my information checked with other states?

A: No, every credential applicant’s information is checked.

Q: What will happen if I do not agree to cancel my credential issued by another state?

A: The BMV will be unable to issue you an Indiana credential.

Q: Can I keep my credential from my previous state of residence?

A: No, all credentials must be surrendered at the time of application for an Indiana credential.

Q: I received a notice from the BMV stating that I have moved, and my credential would be cancelled, but I have not moved.

A: If you received a mover notification that your feel is incorrect, please contact the Customer Contact Center at 888-692-6841, so that they can assist you. The BMV notifies customers of a “moved” condition from their record in response to identifying certain conditions including: Indiana was notified that another state issued a credential to someone holding an Indiana credential Indiana discovered multiple credentials issued to a customer who attempted a credential transaction in our branch or online and declined to surrender other credentials

Q: I talked with someone at the BMV office in a state where I hold an identification card and they said it was all right to have both my Indiana license and their identification card.

A: Some states allow individuals to hold multiple credentials, but Indiana law prohibits it. In addition, federal regulation prohibits certain combinations of credentials like two driver’s license or two federally compliant credentials.

Q: I never held a credential in the state you are reporting to me, should I be concerned about identity theft?

A: If you do not hold a credential in another state and the BMV found one issued under your information, you will want to contact the Customer Contact Center at 888-692-6841.
