Child Care

Working together with your child’s care givers or teachers can help avoid asthma attacks. Talk with care givers or teachers about your child’s asthma. Give them a copy of your child’s Asthma Action Plan. Explain how to read the plan, medications and what to do during an asthma attack. Check your child’s inhaler for medication weekly. Explain the symptoms to look for during an attack and how to use the inhaler. Have a back-up inhaler to use.

Make a checklist of documents to bring and questions you want to ask. Print the Asthma Child Care Checklist to take with you. Visit the Child Care Center in Breatheasyville to learn more about controlling asthma in child care settings.

There are many different choices for child care. Licensed child care homes, child care centers and registered ministries are inspected regularly. Unlicensed child care homes are not regulated or inspected by any government agency. Look for a child care facility that is clean, safe and healthy for your child. Check with the Indiana Bureau of Child Care to locate the right place.

Some licensed early child care homes, centers and registered ministries have enrolled in the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s 5-Star Environmental Recognition Program for Child Care Facilities. This is an education and recognition project for child care facilities that go beyond compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations. This helps to protect children and reach out to their families.
