Preface

The 1990-1994 Indiana Cancer Mortality report summarizes deaths to Indiana residents for which the cause of death was identified as a malignant neoplasm. Both counts of deaths and average annual age-standardized cancer death rates are provided for Indiana, and for each county, by sex and cancer site. Counts and cancer death rates are also provided by sex and race (white and black) for Indiana and for five counties with sufficient minority populations. Age-specific cancer death rates for Indiana are provided for the top four cancer sites.

In order to make valid comparisons between rates for different geographic areas, cancer death rates are adjusted to eliminate the effect of differing age distributions among the areas. Rates in this report were standardized using the US 1970 Standard Million Population. The 1970 Standard Million was used rather than the more common 1940 Standard Million to allow for valid comparisons with cancer death rates produced at a national level.

The information provided in these tables is intended for health professionals, students, legislators and others interested in the health status of Indiana residents. The intent of this publication is to provide information necessary to assess the changing health status of the community, to develop resources and interventions in areas of need, and to improve the modifiable health risk factors which result in adverse health conditions.

Information on each death is provided to the state under the authority of Indiana State Code 16-1-15-5. The cause of death is coded using the International Classification of Disease, Injuries and Cause of Death, Ninth Revision (ICD-9). Codes from 140.0 through 208.9 identify malignant neoplasms.
