New Details Available for Online Certification Renewal Process

Public Librarian CertificationThe online renewals system for Public Librarian Certification is expected to go live on July 1. Anyone renewing online will be required to pay an additional online processing fee of $4.57. However, renewals submitted through US Mail do not include the additional $4.57 fee.

If you plan to renew online, you must fall into into 1 of these 4 categories:

  • You have not changed your library employer or been promoted in your job classification (i.e., Professional Assistant to Branch/Department Head or Branch/Department Head to Director) since you were grandfathered in 2008;
  • You must remain grandfathered status to be certified (for those who do not meet current certification criteria)
  • You are not upgrading your license (i.e., from LC3 to LC2 or LC2 to LC1); or
  • You are not applying for a temporary license.

RANDOM AUDITS
The Professional Development Office will conduct random audits to verify individuals’ participation. However, there is no need to send your LEU certificates with your application for recertification. If your file is selected for random audit, we will contact you between 10/1/2013 and 12/31/2013. If you receive a notice of random audit from PDO, you will then have 30 days to show proof of your LEUs. If you do not receive a notice of random audit from PDO after 12/31/2013, you may discard your LEUs from the 2008-2013 cycle.

LIBRARY EDUCATION UNIT (LEU) REQUIREMENTS
Directors are required to complete 100 LEUs, Branch/Department Heads are required to complete 75 LEUs, and Professional Assistants are required to complete 50 LEUs between the dates their grandfathered licenses were issued and when they expire. LEUs may not be carried over from one renewal period to another.

MORE INFORMATION
If you have any questions about the certification renewal process contact Emily Schaber at 317-234-6217 or emschaber@library.in.gov. You can also review the FAQ page on WebJunction for more information.

Three Indiana Communities Selected for 2013-2014 Big Read Grants

The Big ReadCongratulations to the Jennings County Public Library, Easter Seals Arc of Northeast Indiana, Inc., and the University of Southern Indiana on being awarded 2013-2014 Big Read grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). A total of $1 million in grants will be issued to theses as well as 74 other public libraries, and community, cultural and literary organizations across the nation. These grants will be used to host a Big Read project between September 2013 and June 2014. The NEA created the Big Read program as a way to revitalize the importance of literature in American culture as well as to promote and encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

The Jennings County Public Library will receive $12,150 to feature “The Call of the Wild” during a community-wide reading event. The Easter Seals Arc of Northeast Indiana, Inc. will receive $15,000 to feature the same literary work in Fort Wayne. The University of Southern Indiana (Evansville) will receive $16,000 to feature “The Grapes of Wrath” in a community Big Read. Each grant-winning organization will receive free promotional and educational resources from the NEA, as well as host official events such as a kick-off event to launch the program; activities devoted specifically to its Big Read book or poet; events using the selection as a point of departure; and book discussions in diverse locations aimed at a wide range of audiences.

Applications for the next Big Read grant and information about future application cycles can be found at www.neabigread.org/application_process.php.
