| General Summary of GAL/CASA Volunteer Programs in Indiana in 2006 |
- Children in 65 of Indiana’s 92 counties were served by organized volunteer GAL/CASA programs in 2006
- There were 6 multi-county programs involving 19 counties in 2006
- 32 counties were managed court-based volunteer programs
- 23 counties were managed by 501(c)(3) volunteer programs
- 10 counties were managed by volunteer programs operated under umbrella agencies
- 27 counties appointed either paid GAL attorneys, other paid GAL, or some other form of GAL
- There were 2,008 GAL/CASA volunteers, with 586 of those being newly trained in 2006
- Volunteers spoke up for 17,482 children in 15,849 different cases involving children (volunteers were appointed in CHINS, TPR, DR, JD, JS, GU, JP and other types of cases)
- Regarding advocacy for abused and neglected children only, volunteers spoke up for 12,886 children in Children in Need of Services, (5,250 of those children were new appointments in 2006), and 2,936 children in Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) cases
- While courts in all 92 counties reported a total of 25,768 new and pending JC cases in 2006, established volunteer programs in 65 counties advocated for 50% (12,886) of the total number of these adjudicated cases in the state.
- Volunteers donated a total of 343,722 hours in 2006. Had they been paid $50.00 per hour (the average rate paid to an attorney GAL), they would have donated a total of 17.2 million dollars, or an average of $8,565.00 per volunteer
- Indiana GAL/CASA volunteer programs were staffed by 153 employees (94 full-time and 59 part-time) in 2006.
