The Porter Environmental Sustainability Commission (ESC) is proud to announce the installation of new native plant gardens at Town Hall, thanks to a collaborative effort with local partners.
The project was made possible through the support of the Town of Porter and generous native plant donations and expert design consultation from Chesterton Feed & Garden and the Urban Pollinator Project, a newly established local nonprofit dedicated to promoting pollinator-friendly environments.
The corner garden beds at Town Hall were transformed, replacing traditional landscaping with diverse native plant species that are more eco-friendly and supportive of local ecosystems. The ESC’s goal is to establish a trail of native demonstration gardens throughout town in hopes that it will inspire residents and visitors to adopt more biodiverse landscaping practices that benefit pollinators, butterflies, and birds—many of which are currently facing population declines.
The native plant movement continues to gain momentum across our region. We are excited to share that Chesterton Feed & Garden is now offering an expanded selection of native plants to support this growing interest. We encourage the community to visit their store and explore native plant options for their own gardens.
The ESC is committed to fostering a more sustainable, resilient environment for generations to come and extends thanks to all who made this project possible.
