Story by the Indiana Veterans’ Home
The Indiana Veterans’ Home (IVH) is celebrating a major milestone in its mission to provide exceptional care for Indiana’s veterans. For the third consecutive year, IVH has received federal funding through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Nursing Grant Program—an initiative aimed at tackling nursing shortages and improving staff retention.
This grant is more than just financial support; it’s a lifeline for both residents and caregivers. By funding recruitment, retention, and referral bonuses for Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), IVH is creating a stronger, more stable workforce dedicated to serving those who served our nation.
“This funding is crucial in our mission to provide the highest quality care to those who have served our nation,” said Amy Gibson, Superintendent of IVH. “It allows us to invest in our nursing team and maintain stability in staffing, which directly benefits our residents.”
Staff members say the grant is already making a difference. “The grant is a good incentive to keep staff here,” shared Sandra Gill, LPN. “It is also something to look forward to.”
The VA grant covers up to 50% of the incentive program’s cost, calculated using a formula tied to the home’s total per diem payments. Funds can be distributed quarterly or in lump sums, giving IVH flexibility to meet evolving staffing needs.
To mark this achievement, IVH hosted a celebration on January 20, 2026, complete with a ceremonial check presentation and discussions on how the grant will continue to enhance veteran care.
