Opportunity offers current Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis student chance to experience state government
(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is pleased to announce that Matt Wells of Madison is currently completing his office’s 2010 Fellowship Program. The summer-long program selects college and university students from around the state and allows them the opportunity to experience state government first-hand through the Secretary of State’s office.
“I feel Matt is the kind of individual who has the ability to help guide our state and country with his exceptional leadership and innovative mind in future years,” said Secretary Rokita. “He exemplifies the type of distinguished students we have here in Indiana and, I’m thrilled he will be a part of our office this summer as he is a valuable addition.”
Wells is currently seeking a law degree from Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis. He is also an alumnus of Butler University where he was active in Sigma Chi Fraternity, serving as President and a volunteer for the Martin Luther King Center. Wells has completed internships with Lt. Governor Becky Skillman and the House of Representatives. In addition, he is currently running for the City-County Council in Indianapolis.
“I’m most looking forward to building relationships with the people I work with and getting exposure to more departments within the state government outside the legislature,” said Wells. “The office is somewhat of a nonpartisan watchdog for the citizens of Indiana, and I look forward to playing a small role in that.”
During his time in the Secretary’s office thus far, Wells has already learned the office is very diverse both in its functions and its personnel. In addition, he will have the opportunity to meet with politicians and state officials, which will help further his understanding of the political and governing process.
“I also believe this fellowship will provide direct interaction with the constituents. That is always useful in reminding you who you work for,” said Wells. “I like the satisfaction that comes with working for people and not working to sell a product; there’s a sense of satisfaction that comes from working with people that believe in a common goal, and for an official that you believe in.”
A 2006 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School, Wells is the son of Martin and Denise Wells. He will graduate from Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis in 2012 and will pursue a career he’s passionate about.
