The thought of the wind against your face as you ride down the street on your new motorcycle can be exhilarating. However, there are some things you need to know before buying a new motorcycle, especially one that has been used before.

When buying a used motorcycle, it’s smart to take an experienced rider with you, or take the motorcycle to a mechanic to ensure that it’s safe for riding.

Here are some tips when it comes to buying a used motorcycle:

  • Check for oil leaks- This could indicate the need for engine repairs.
  • Check the tire wear- Odd tire wear on low mileage motorcycles could be an indication that there’s a problem with the alignment or a sign that the odometer has been changed or tampered with. New tires can cost around $300 for the pair.
  • Check for dents and scratches- This is an indication that the motorcycle may have been involved in an accident. In addition, bent lights and foot pegs are signs that the motorcycle had recently been in an accident.
  • Check the filter and fluids- This is one way to tell if the owner has taken proper care of the bike.
  • Check the drive chain- If the drive chain is dry or rusty, it’s most likely worn out and will need to be replaced. This replacement will cost about $50 without installation.
  • Check the lights- The lights should be in working order.
  • Check the brakes- Both brakes should be in working order.
  • Check the transmission- The transmission should be in working order.

Overall, it is best to test out the motorcycle for yourself prior to the purchase in order to ensure that it is safe for use.
