Addressing the opioid epidemic is not only a top priority for public health, it will also help build stronger communities and allow those with substance use disorders to lead healthier, more productive lives.
Therefore, the state of Indiana applied for and received a 21st Century Cures funding grant for a statewide targeted response to the opioid crisis. In order to reduce the stigmas that are creating barriers to treatment, we need to view people struggling with an opioid dependency with a humane lens.
By providing educational training to key community-based partners and organizations, they in turn will provide education as they engage in their local communities. In addition, we will collaborate with local leaders to help them understand and help decrease the stigma associated with opioid use disorder. As each community understands more – we hope to decrease the stigma associated with opioid use disorder.
Understanding Opioid Use Disorder
The purpose of this training video is to help build awareness and understanding about opioid use disorder (OUD) and to increase the public’s understanding around three key messages:
- Opioid use disorder is a disease.
- There is treatment for a person with opioid use disorder.
- Recovery is possible.
Those who are trained will be equipped with the background and knowledge they need to use the OUD outreach presentation (found under Tools & Resources) in communities across Indiana.
