Indiana Tobacco Quitline 1-800-QUIT-NOW

Quitline > Youth Youth

While Indiana’s youth smoking rate has significantly declined since 2000, numbers from the Youth Tobacco Survey show that 18 percent of Indiana high school students smoke cigarettes. This adds up to more than 66,000 Hoosier high school teens that currently smoke.

The Indiana Tobacco Quitline services are for adults age 18 and older. For those 18 and under who are looking to kick their tobacco use, specialized programs exist across the state.

Tobacco Awareness Program (TAP) is a comprehensive tobacco cessation curriculum addressing smoking and spit tobacco. TAP is an eight-week program that provides cessation assistance through self-assessment and challenging weekly assignments. The TAP curriculum guides users to their quit date and helps them remain tobacco-free. It takes into account the fact that participants begin, continue and decide to quit for a variety of reasons. The TAP curriculum encourages each person to choose the methods of cessation that they believe will work best for them. This course is offered to youth 14-18 years old.

Also offered in various locations across the state is the Tobacco Education Group (TEG). TEG is an alternative to suspension for those caught using tobacco products on school property. It also serves as a Court-Diversion program for youth who violate state and local laws on the purchase and use of tobacco by minors. The program consists of eight 45-50 minute sessions involving lectures, videos, demonstrations, discussions, problem-solving, and cooperative learning strategies. TEG motivates adolescents to move toward the preparation and action stages of quitting tobacco. The program addresses both smoking and spit tobacco use. This course is also offered to youth 14-18 years old.
