TOKYO (September 12, 2007) - Each time Governor Mitch Daniels visits with a business or government official during his weeklong trade mission to Japan, the work of an Indiana artist goes with him. The governor is taking glasswork made by a Hartford City native with him to present as gifts to the Japanese companies.

Ryan Gothrup created the hand blown glass cylinders and vases in the state colors of blue and gold. They are all one-of-a-kind, in various shapes and designs. Gothrup uses an Americanized style of classic Italian techniques.

"We're proud to showcase this work by a fine young Indiana artist," said Daniels.

Gift-giving is important in Japanese business protocol, and emphasis is placed on this ritual. The exchange usually occurs near the end of a meeting. Daniels has presented the glasswork to the top executive for each company or governmental body he has met with on the trip. Neckties or scarves in the state colors or cuff links also are given to other officials who attend the meetings.

Gothrup attended the Herron School of Art and discovered his interest in glasswork at the Indianapolis Art Center. He eventually earned his undergraduate degree at Kent State University and returned to Indiana to teach at the Indianapolis Art Center. He currently is pursuing a graduate degree in Virginia. Gothrup's work has been exhibited in galleries through the Midwest.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) purchased the glasswork from Gothrup. No state funds, only private contributions to the IEDC Foundation, are used to pay for any of the state's overseas trade missions.
