Requirements & Additional Information

The State of Indiana has created a registry of individuals who do not hold a valid license to practice in Indiana but can be mobilized to help fight COVID-19 by issuing temporary permits to practice. Any individual who utilizes the registry may work initially for 90 days (extendable in 30 day increments) or until the public health emergency is over. Once the emergency is over, their license will expire and all existing application procedures must be followed such as taking the appropriate licensure exam and passing a criminal background check. This registry will be open to:

  • Out-of-state healthcare practitioners;
  • Retired healthcare professionals; and
  • Recent graduates of accredited medical, registerd nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, and respiratory care programs.

These individuals who are seeking temporary licensure will be required to submit their information to the registry found above in order to temporarily practice in the State of Indiana during the current public health crisis. For specific requirements for each license practitioner group, please see below.

Practitioner Specific Requirements

Out-of-State Practitioners: All healthcare professionals who hold, or have recently held, a valid license to practice in another state may utilize the registry. Their license to practice must either be currently active or have expired within the last five years. Their license to practice must be similar to the practice they will be providing in the State of Indiana and they must attest that their license has not been revoked or suspended.

Their license to practice must be similar to the practice they will be providing in the State of Indiana and they must attest that their license has not been revoked or suspended.

Current or Recently Graduated Medical Students: If a medical student is in their last semester of, or has graduated in the past 90 days from, a 4-year program from an accredited medical school, they may utilize the registry and be granted a temporary, limited scope license which allows them to practice under the indirect supervision of a licensed physician.

Recent Graduates of Registered Nursing, Physician Assistant, or Respiratory Care Programs:  All recent graduates of an accredited program should submit their initial application for full licensure with PLA and provide a copy of their Certificate of Completion of the program. The applicant must have a pending licensure application in order to utilize and be included on the registry.
