Investor-Owned Utilities

Service TerritoriesIndiana has several different types of electric providers across the state, each with its own designated service territory. One of these types is referred to as investor-owned utilities or IOUs. Indiana has five (5) IOUs that serve electricity needs across their service territories. These five utilities are vertically-integrated, for-profit entities that own and generate power, transmit the electricity once it is generated, and then distribute it to residential, commercial, and industrial consumers. The five (5) utilities are:

  1. NIPSCO
  2. AEP d/b/a Indiana Michigan Power
  3. Duke Energy Indiana
  4. Indianapolis Power & Light
  5. Vectren
  • Northern Indiana Public Service Company, (NIPSCO) is a subsidiary of NiSource is headquartered in Merrillville, Indiana. NIPSCO serves approximately 464,000 consumers in northwestern Indiana.
  • Indiana-Michigan Power (I&M) is based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is a subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP), headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. I&M serves approximately 463,000 customers across northeastern and north-central Indiana.
  • Duke Energy is based in Plainfield, Indiana, and is a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. The utility serves approximately 813,000 customers across Indiana.
  • Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL) is based in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is a subsidiary of AES Corporation, located in Arlington, Virginia. IPL serves approximately 487,000 customers in the greater Indianapolis area.
  • Vectren is based in Evansville, Indiana, and is a subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy located in Houston, Texas. Vectren serves approximately 148,000 customers in southwestern Indiana.
