What’s a plug - in hybrid electric vehicle?
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) can be charged with electricity like pure
electric vehicles or charged from a standard vehicle engine like a hybrid electric

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Benefits
PHEVs offer many benefits to consumers, fleets and the nation as a whole. Cutting
fuel use and costs, increasing our nation’s energy security and
protecting the environment are just some of the benefits.

Cutting Fuel Use and Costs
Typically an equivalent amount of electricity costs less than gasoline or diesel
fuel. Since PHEVs use electric power more than standard hybrid vehicles and
their batteries are usually recharged overnight by plugging into a outlet, using
electricity from the grid, there is a significant reduction in fuel costs.

Reducing Our Dependence on Foreign Oil
Today, over 60% of our nation’s oil comes from a foreign source. Nearly
two-thirds of this oil is used for transportation needs. Developing PHEVs and
other alternative fuel technologies will help reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Researchers at the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable
Energy are working to advance PHEV technology. The Richard
G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy is located at Indiana
University Purdue University of Indianapolis. Partners include:
Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), Central Indiana
Clean Cities Alliance and Indiana University Purdue University
of Indianapolis. This research project is supported through a
grant from the Indiana Office of Energy & Defense Development.
