Lead

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) has determined that all children under the age of seven years who reside in St. Joseph County are at a high risk of lead poisoning. Public Health Nurses provide case management services to children (under the age of seven years) with elevated blood lead levels and their families. These case management services are implemented in an effort to reduce the effects of lead poisoning.

The Department of Health provides certificates to any resident of St. Joseph County under the age of seven for a blood lead screening. These screenings are performed on-site in the Immunization Clinics at no charge to the parent/guardian of the child. Testing is also available at the South Bend Medical Foundation (SBMF). Health Care providers must report elevated lead levels to the Department of Health by faxing a completed reporting form to (574) 245-6581.
