How to Protect Yourself & Pets

The following measures should be taken BEFORE going into an area where ticks may be present:

• Wear light-colored clothing to detect ticks
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants
• Tuck shirts into pants and tuck pants into socks
• Wear closed-toed shoes
• Wear a hat to cover hair
• Use an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET on clothing and skin
• Apply permethrin to clothes and shoes (DO NOT apply to skin)
• Apply a pet-safe tick repellent (consult with your veterinarian)

The following measures should be taken AFTER going into an area where ticks may be present:

• Check your entire body for ticks after leaving the area
• Shower as soon as possible
• Wash clothes in hot water and dry on high heat
• Check your pet thoroughly for ticks
