Scope and Content:
This collection consists of letters written from 1845 to 1876, with an envelope date stamped 1880. A number of families are represented, including Hole [Whole], Dunkerly [Dunkerley], Clark, Poorman, Slinkard, Douthil, Sisis, and C[a/o]ffenderix. Letters pass to and from Hutsonville, Robinson, and Darwin, Illinois; Drakesville, Iowa; and Covington and Newberry, Indiana.
The topics discussed are mostly social, with a few love letters (from George Dunkerly [Dunkerley] to Rachel [Rachael] Hole). There is an account of a fight, including a brutal stabbing, in the letter of 5-9-1856. The severity of illness on the frontier is revealed in the letter from the Poorman family to the Sisis family, revealing there “has been near thirty deaths in Robinson since the first of January as high as five buried at Robinson graveyard in one day” from spotted fever.
