Henry B. Carrington was born March 2, 1824 in Massachusetts. An anti-slavery Republican, he was commissioned as colonel in Union Army in May 1861. The following year, Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton requested Carrington’s help to draft Indiana men into service. Carrington also worked to neutralize Morton’s political enemies, including Copperheads and Democrats. In November 1862, Carrington was promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers. Carrington was also a prolific author, lawyer, and professor of military science at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) was a New England poet and longtime editor of the New York Evening Post. He was active in the Free Soil Party and worked to prevent the spread of slavery.
