Biographical Note:

Chief Larry Godfroy was born on October 29, 1895, in Butter Township, Miami County, Indiana. He was educated at the Stony Point School, located on his family’s farm, about five miles east of Peru, Indiana. He went to school until the eighth grade. His grandfather, Gabriel, was known as the Chief of the Miami Native Americans. Godfroy’s father, Peter, had at least seven children. Larry was the fourth out of the seven. He claimed that there were more siblings but he didn’t know them. The family was known as a family of chiefs.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of an oral history transcript of an interview by F. Gerald (Jerry) Handfield with Larry Godfroy, which took place on January 21, 1980. The interview contains details about the Stony Point School, which was on the Godfroy Farm. He discussed his chores and duties that he performed on his family’s farm as well as how he learned about his Miami Heritage.
