Biographical Note:

John M. Flinn was born in Canada, approximately 1833/1834. He lived near Shelbyville with his wife Margaret and his daughter Zora. He joined the army on April 25, 1861 as First Lieutenant in Company V of the 7th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. He then joined Company F of the 51st Regiment, serving as Captain. He was mustered out on Dec. 14, 1864. He died in 1872 at the age of 38.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of letters written by Flinn to his wife and daughter during his service in the Civil War, as well as his 1862 discharge papers, some army-related documents, and a letter to Mrs. Margaret Flinn dated 1876. Some of the materials are fragile. The topics included in Flinn’s letters include army life, his health, and related matters.
