Biographical Note:

Dr. Asahel Clapp was born October 5, 1792 in Massachusetts. Dr. Clapp moved to Indiana around 1817, where he was one of the earliest physicians in the area. In 1820, Dr. Clapp married Mary Scribner, daughter of one of the founders of New Albany, Indiana. After his first wife past away in 1831, Dr. Clapp married a second time. He had three children live beyond childhood (one from his first marriage and two from his second): Lucinda, Mary, and William. Dr. Clapp died in 1900.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection contains a Photostat diary of Asahel Clapp (1819–1862). Topics covered in his diary include geology, botany, and local community news. The collection also includes news-clipping excerpts from A Hoosier Listening Post by Kate Milner Rabb (1930 – 1931).
