Biographical Note:

Roscoe Bain Fleming was born Sept. 16, 1895, in Edgemont, South Dakota. He attended Moores Hill College in Evansville, Indiana and graduated from Indiana University. Fleming began writing for newspapers in Fargo, South Dakota, and worked for papers in Richmond, Indiana, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Baltimore, Maryland., Washington, D.C., Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and Fort Worth, Texas, before moving to Denver Colorado in 1936 to work for the Rocky Mountain News.
He became a columnist for The Denver Post in 1941 and wrote for the Christian Science Monitor. Fleming served as a second lieutenant in the Army Artillery in World War I. In 1991, he married Mary Noble in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection has one folder containing The Story of Indiana, by Roscoe B. Fleming. This is a six-part article about the Ku Klux Klan and prohibition in Indiana politics in the 1920’s. He gives a brief biography of D.C. Stephenson, the Grand Dragon of Indiana’s Ku Klux Klan, and his stakes amongst the political elite of the city and state including Governor Ed Jackson, and Indianapolis Mayor John L. Duvall. Fleming discusses Edward S. Shumaker, Superintendent of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League and his involvement with members of the Indiana Republican Party leaders. Finally, Fleming relates the role of newspapers in reporting these stories.
