Historical Note:

American Express was established in 1850 in New York as an express delivery service.  Express men on horseback were responsible for making deliveries across the country in the early days of the company’s history.  In 1882 American Express expanded their business to include money orders, and introduced the first traveler’s checks in 1891.  The first American Express credit card was issued in 1958.

This collection consists of the record book for the American Express Company, Brookston, Indiana office.  The record book details deliveries shipped to individuals in 1894 and 1895 including the name of the sender, city of origination, details pertaining to the package, and the signature of the receiving party.
