Biographical Note:

Harold Cortez Dimmich was born August 20, 1903, in Boswell, Indiana, the son of Cortez A. and Grace (Cooper) Dimmich.  Dimmich attended Purdue University and the Indiana University School of Dentistry, from which he received his D.D.S. degree in 1926.  He worked as a dental surgeon in Fort Wayne, Indiana, throughout his life, and was active in professional dental associations.  On May 8, 1928, Dimmich married Margaret Frederick.  They had two children:  Lois Joanne and Thomas Cortez Dimmich.  Dimmich was married a second time to Wilma Allmandinger in 1943.  He died March 19, 1998.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection consists of two letters, one addressed to “To whom it may concern,” the other to Marybelle Burch, Manuscripts Division of the Indiana State Library.  Both are letters from Harold Dimmich.  The feature of both letters is an extended anecdote about Elmore Barce, an attorney practicing in Fowler, Indiana, in 1921.  The tale recounts how a high school principal seized the profits from a class play and would not return them.  The indignant students met with Elmore Barce who, rather than recommending any legal action, recommended that the graduating students forget what happened “as any proposed action would cause hard feelings and is not good for us or the community.”  The second letter, dated August 13, 1986, adds some afterthoughts to the anecdote.  The anecdote and comments were made accompanying Mr. Dimmich’s transmittal of Elmore Barce’s book Land of Miamis.
