Biographical Note:

James Mount was born in 1843 to a Montgomery County farmer. He served for three years during the Civil War in the Seventy-Second Indiana Infantry. Following the war, he began tenant farming in Montgomery County.  After a decade, he was successful enough to buy the land he war farming, and soon became a prominent farmer and landowner.  In part because of his popularity and notoriety as a farmer, Mount was sent to the state senate in 1888 to serve a term.  He was elected governor of Indiana in 1896, and died in 1901 two days after his term expired.
